Common designed five prefabricated self-contained ‘SkyPod’ accommodation units in Cape Otway, Victoria. For the project we prepared a masterplan that negotiated overlapping environmental and cultural heritage statutory controls, so that no existing native vegetation was removed, identified sites of aboriginal cultural heritage were undisturbed, all units are not-visible to surrounding properties, public spaces and each other, while maximising access to views of the surrounding landscapes. Each unit is off grid, serviced by shared solar arrays, battery banks and rain water tanks. The project was a finalist in the 2020 Australian Sustainability Awards and was featured in The Age newspaper as one of Australia’s top regional ‘getaway’ destinations.
