Located in one of the city's inner suburbs, the brick shell of a former bakery was altered to accommodate a young professional couple who was looking for a larger space to work, live and entertain. The original shopfront, located on a very long and narrow site had a number of constraints that made the provision of basic amenity very difficult. Poor orientation, a small plot and a number of tight planning constraints that made natural lighting hard to achieve with a conventional design. The response was a flexible system of folded shells that are arrayed along the site, which deform to address changing conditions. Volumes shift up and down allowing direct sunlight to bathe the interior spaces either during the morning or afternoon.
